SALAT (PRAYER)

BISMILLAHIR RAHMANIR RAHEEM

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE MOST GRACIOUS AND COMPASSIONATE, THE MOST MERCIFUL

All praises and thanks are due to Allah for granting us a form of Worship more unique than that of any other umma, He made Salat the best channel of communication and proximity to His Mighty and He again made it the first thing to be questioned about on the Day of Accountability and Reckoning. Anyone who will have his Salat intact on that Day will be dwelling under the amnesty of the Divine pleasure (among the dwellers of Paradise), and anyone who will fall on the contrast will be among the dwellers of the lost (among the dwellers of Hell-fire). May Allah grant us Janna (Paradise).
Eternal blessings and salutations of Allah be upon His Messenger Muhammad Musthapha, his family and companions, Amin.
Salat is the most important and enforced pillar of Islam after the two Shahada: after giving a scrupulous testimony to the two Shahada, one can live and die as a Muslim without giving Zakat or performing pilgrimage if the person is not granted that material strength, even Sawn (fasting) if a person engulfed in an inhabiting situation; but only Salat seized to pay homage to all these exceptions, in that; a Muslim is not a Muslim without his/her Salat.
The daily prescribed, mandatory and obligatory Salat are five (5); Fajr, Zuhur, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha’e

  • Fajr (Subhi or dawn) is made up of two cycles (Raka’ats)
  • Zuhur is made up of four cycles (4)
  • Asr is made up of four cycles (4)
  • Maghrib made up of three cycles (3)
  • Isha’e is made up of four cycles (4)
Which means, every Muslim is supposed to offer Seventeen (17) cycles or Raka’at in every blessed day.

THE ADHAN AND IQAMA

Adhan and Iqama are the first two compulsory aspects in our preparation for Salat. Which means; they are not part of the Salat itself but rather among the compulsory preparations we do before beginning our Salat; in that the Adhan and Iqama are best described as pre-Salat activities.
Adhan is the act of calling people to Salat by means of using the known and acceptable articles of Adhan;

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar
Ash-hadu allailaaha illallahu, Ash-hadu allailaaha illallahu
Ash-hadu anna Muhammadar-Rasuulullahi, Ash-hadu anna Muhammadar-Rasuulullahi
Hayya’alal Salat, Hayya’alal Salat
Hayya’alal fahahi, Hayya’alal fahahi,
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar
Laa-ilaaha illallahu.”
According to the Messenger of Allah peace be upon Him; the one listening to the call of Adhan is supposed to repeat the exact words, however, the ‘hay’ala’ (‘hayya’alal Salat’ and ‘hayya’alal falahi’) should be replaced by the listener with ‘hawqala’,(‘laa hawla wala quwwata illa billahil-Aliyyil Azeem.’) and when the Adhan ends, both the Adhan caller and listener should recite this du’a:
“Allahumma Rabba hazihil da’awatil taammat, wal Salatil-qa’imat, ati sayyidana Muhammadal-waseelata wal fadeelat, wal darajatal aliyatal-rafee’at, wab’as-hu maqaaman-Mahmudan-lazee wa’adtahu, innaka laa tukhliful mee’ad.”
The Prophet of Allah S.A.W said in an authentic Hadith; “Whoever repeats what the Adhan caller is saying and ended by making this Du’a of Wasilat, he will benefit from my intercession on the Day of Resurrection”.
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar
Ash-hadu allailaaha illallahu, Ash-hadu allailaaha illallahu
Ash-hadu anna Muhammadar-Rasuulullahi, Ash-hadu anna Muhammadar-Rasuulullahi
Hayya’alal Salat,
Hayya’alal fahahi,
Qad qamatil-Salatu, Qad qamatil-Salatu
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar
Laa-ilaaha illallahu.”
In a nutshell, the Adhan and the Iqama are compulsories of sufficiency (that is, if one person does it is sufficient for all) in a congregation. It is a Sunna (Prophetic tradition) on a single person at home or on a journey, it is, however, unpleasant to women. The Adhan is not to be said unless it is time for Salat, but for Fajr Salat, it is allowed to for the first Adhan to be called after half of the whole night is gone.

  1. please Shaik, if the time for these prayers were included ,we will have a benefit a lot.

    1. Masha’Allah!
The time and periods of the five daily prescribed Salats are as follows:
      FAJR(Dawn Salat)
The time for Fajr is after the appearance of the dawn-light;known as “Fajr”,which is somewhere 4:50am depending on the weather condition, and ends at sunrise.

      ZUHUR
The time for Zuhur also sets in when the sun shifts from the east;period known as “zawal” (زوال)which is somewhere 12noon depending on the weather condition and ends where the sun reaches its “rising limit”;known as “akhirul-qamati”(آخرالقامة) which is somewhere 2:00-2:30pm.

      ASR
Asr also begins from the “akhirul-qamati”and ends at sunset. The ending for Asr is quiet insignificant but however, can best be recognized in a sudden disappearance of the sunlight.

      MAGHRIB
The time and duration for Maghrib is the shortest one among all the five Salats. It begins immediately at sunset and ends at the appearance of the “yellow-sky” which is not more than 30minutes away.

      Isha’e
The time of Isha’e also begins from the appearance of the “yellow-sky” and ends at one-third of the night;which is at 12:00am.

The explanation given here is based on “waqtul-ikhtiyar”(وقت الإختيار) i.e the required time for each Salat. However,we have also for every Salat “waqtul-darur”(وقت الضرور) i.e the time of circumstance. We will discuss more on them in our subsequent articles on Salat,InshaAllah.
